Wikipedia, Violet Blue, Ben Burch
2 August 2008
Some Wiki-drama has kicked up over the Violet Blue article at Wikipedia. Her boyfriend was openly editing it for some time, and a few other editors disagreed with this, citing a conflict of interest. I personally think its fine, so long as he's watched (and he was). Things between myself and Ben Burch were curt but generally friendly. We were not quite seeing eye-to-eye. Discussion ensues and for once, when the dust settles, all was well. The content of the article was perfectly agreed upon.
All is well, great, time to unwatch
I personally have no exposure to Violet Blue before this debacle. I was favoring her boyfriend's free contribution to the article and was accused by Wiki-passer-byers of being related to Violet Blue, a sockpuppet of her boyfriend, or somehow on her side. After a few days, nothing happens and I unwatch the articles in question. I was going to the West Coast in a few weeks and I was going to see if Blue's boyfriend maybe wanted to get a beer and chuckle about the whole thing. I was practically his wikilawyer.
Then she decides to...
Then Violet Blue takes it upon herself to cite, in a police report, a threat of physical violence from Ben Burch, a random internet joe with a long edit history and a kind, agreeable, and consensus-respecting manner. Of course her nonsense is laughed out of court. If I allow the immediate response of contempt to pass, what follows... is just more contempt.
What a perfectly awful thing to do to someone -- the edits, nor even the TOPICS which Ben Burch was arguing over were not in the least bit controversial. There was no embarrassment to hide. This Blue girl has a weak stomach for inquiry if she really considered Burch's innocuous edits to be threatening. Sensitive ego, weak character, indecent, malicious. Her chronic denial of her birth-name and age are starting to click; given this last bit, her spat with Xeni Jardin is somewhat ironic.
Personally, if Blue's boyfriend had any say in her decision to legally hassle Burch, I regret ever so much as correcting a mis-indentation on his part. We'll see (he's temp blocked for the legal dispute for now)
update
Reading her response I've softened my position a bit. I still think it was a bit of a stretch to think Burch harmful.
